Taekuk Musul History
There are many martial art styles and systems in the world these days. More are being unleashed and introduced to unsuspecting public who know little or nothing at all about martial arts. Most people know only what they see in the movies, read in books or what they have gleaned from advertisements or heard from unknowledgeable or semi-knowledgeable friends or relatives. There are many beliefs, stories, urban legends, and tales of exploits of martial arts masters and the styles and of those masters. People have from all this information conjured up in their minds an image of martial arts that is far from the truth or is exaggerated and out of proportion. The public really does not know what true martial arts is all about, does not know much history of martial arts, nor do they know what a good martial art really is. A person interested in learning martial arts should do an extensive investigation of all the schools and styles in his or her area. There are good schools around but most are still not as complete as Taekuk Musul or as flexible and rewarding or versatile. Most schools and styles are competition based and not much good for self-defense. They do not even teach pressure points, joint manipulation or falling techniques let alone techniques that will help a person on the street if they get attacked. Most people after seeing a martial art movie or cartoon or advertisement get enthused and run out and find the nearest martial arts studio not knowing much about martial arts at all except what they have seen in the movies or in advertisements. Myths and incomplete information is all they have to go by. They do not know the martial art they are getting into is most likely not really a complete martial art nor is it a good martial art. Probably the system they begin to study is not only limited in what they teach but also how they teach it. However, unknowingly, they sign up and go through the approximate eighteen month program, get a black belt and think they are one bad person. But in fact, they have not really learned all that much about martial arts, only what they learned in the limited dojo or dojang in which they studied. They learned from some restricted in knowledge and biased instructor or studio owner who is not all that knowledgeable him or her self. What they have learned is only a smidgen of what martial arts are about. Kicking, punching and competition fighting along with a few one-steps and if you are lucky a few hand techniques are what most schools teach and that is it. This is not the case with Taekuk Musul. Taekuk Musul is a comprehensive and complete martial art. There is no buyer beware here. There is the soft circular flowing easy going movement along with and the straight and hard power movement. Hard punches combine with soft flowing strikes and penetrating strikes and pressure point manipulation to bring maximum effectiveness. The use of pressure points is a prominent factor in Taekuk Musul along with muscle and joint separation and bone breakage. All the high kicks of other martial arts are included along with low spinning kicks, flying techniques, sweeps and falling techniques. Taekuk Musul is derived from the rich and varied martial arts techniques and traditions that have arisen in Korea throughout the ages. Although there are sport aspects to Taekuk Musul, it is not really a sport, nor is it simply another Asian self-defense method. Taekuk Musul is a complete martial art that is dedicated to the cultivation of mental and physical strength and well-being and the preservation of traditional Korean martial arts. Using Taekuk Musul and its principles, one can in any situation ward off and defend their self. One learns to remain calm and react only as needed. By learning and finally knowing ones self and offering a soft answer rather than harsh or strong words a person can ward off most verbal or even physical attacks. This and understanding and compassion for others is the goal of the Taekuk Musul practitioner. Taekuk Musul study makes young and old stronger mentally, more alert in the soul, more calm in the emotions, physically strong, flexible, and reactive. Taekuk Musul promotes doing the right things in life. Although Taekuk Musul practitioners are confident and secure and courageous, lying, cheating, stealing, egomanias, and immoralities are not a part of Taekuk Musul. The treatment of others is utmost important. They learn how to treat others by learning about their self and understanding how they would want to be treated. Learning about ones self and ones limitations and how to go beyond those limitations makes a difference in relations and communications with all peoples. This produces a happier life and more successful life that is productive and reduces limitations. Taekuk Musul teaches and promotes internal and exterior completeness and understanding of ones whole self. The whole person is considered not just the physical. It trains the mind, the will, the emotions, and the spirit of mankind without teaching religion. To the Taekuk Musul stylist, the Healing Arts are important for proper and complete martial arts training. One can separate muscles and tendons, break and dislocate bones and ligaments or also set them and cause them to heal. Healing is the most important part of any situation between two people or a group of people. Bringing healing to a situation will cause friendship for life along with enjoyment and peace, but fighting to win only causes lordship and intimidation over another with no feelings for mankind or consideration for others. In this case one of the parties will forever be upset at the other and will want to fight in the future. Healing and mutual respect brings warmth and understanding and kindness and love and joy. Fighting brings war, hurts, strife and bitterness and evil. This is the Taekuk Musul directive; bring healing to all situations if at all possible. The Taekuk Musul practitioner will always seek to bring healing rather than destruction or hurt. With one thumb, finger or hand, or even an elbow or other part of the body, a Taekuk Musul practitioner can bring pain, paralysis, cause death or even bring about healing. Healing is the most important. It depends upon the placement and the pressure of the thumb, finger, hand, or body part as to whether it brings healing or destruction. There are 365 pressure points in the human body along with the meridian channels in which the life energy flows through every individual. Manipulation of these pressure points and meridians can be used to promote healing or hurt. Also the five element theory of understanding and how it relates to each individual in humanity is also considered and taught. Of course, the Taekuk Musul practitioner uses any combination of all this along with the correct pressure to produce temporary or lasting results whether it be healing or defense. Throwing, thwarting throws of an attacking opponent, falling, and ground fighting are as much a part of Taekuk Musul as kicking and punching and high flying maneuvers. In class sessions each student goes through a segment of falling technique practice and training. This is called matt forms. Forward rolls, backward rolls, face falling and side falling are a part of falling techniques. Acrobatics are included also such as cartwheels, front and back flips, hand stands and more. As a Taekuk Musul student goes up in rank, he or she will learn new and more complex throwing and throwing counters and falling techniques and acrobatics. Ground fighting is included at the higher color ranks and will get more intensive at black belt ranks. The history of Taekuk Musul includes the colorful and exciting history of Korea and its kings and the Hwarang of the Shila Kingdom. Grand Master Kim is part of this documented history. He has affidavits, written in Korean, that prove his lineage goes back to the Kings of the Shila Kingdom in South Korea and the Hwarang knights. This documentation is viewable to anyone who asks to view it. Grand Master Kim is the 34th generational descendent of last Shila King, Kyung Soon Wang, Wang meaning King as in King Kyung Soon. Korea was once a large Country that included much of Manchuria and parts of China. Called Gojosan, it included all the peninsula area where modern Korea is today. It was founded by Tan Gun Wang. Years later there came in a group of people with a mighty leader who basically drove the Korean people to where they now reside. There developed in this new Korean peninsula area three separate kingdoms called Kogurio, Pekchae, and Shila. Kogurio was the largest and most north. Pekchae was located on the Western and Southern coast. The Shila kingdom was located in Eastern southern Korea along the costal section and into the mountains of that area. The founder of the small Shila Kingdom was Kim War Ge Wang. There was much warring between the three kingdoms. Finally years later and much fighting Tae Jong Mu Yur Wang and the Hwarang of the Shila kingdom won out and established one large country called Shila. He and his family successors ruled the new united Shila kingdom for approximately 1000 years. Towards the end of that period a new, opposing ruler rose up out the northern kingdom area. He and his army took over the country. Kyung Soon Wang was the last ruler of the Shila kingdom who ruled Shila at the end of the 1000 years. This king is Grand Master Kim’s 34th generation relative. It appears through documentation that Grand Master Kim is a direct descendent of Kyung Soon Wang. As you can see, that through Grand Master Kim’s heritage, the roots of Taekuk Musul go deep into the colorful history of Korea and its people. Grand Master Kim’s family handed down from generation to generation many martial art techniques, practices and style. Although not called Taekuk Musul at that time, Taekuk Musul is of royal heritage and is considered to be a Royal Court Korean martial art. Grand Master Kim coined the new name for his family art, Tae Kuk Mu Sul. It has now been changed recently to a more correct Taekuk Musul. Along with the handed down family art of Grand Master Kim’s heritage, Grand Master Kim added other Korean styles and their methods, techniques, and ways of doing martial arts. From Japan and Okinawa there are martial art styles that actually have a Korean base to them. Grand Master Kim added those into Taekuk Musul also. Along with the healing arts, this makes Taekuk Musul much varied and complete with a multiplicity of martial content. Because of this, Taekuk Musul is a very practical and functional martial art that can be used by young and old and male and female. What about Grand Master Kim? Being a middle aged man of small stature, he is still slim and active and strong. Intelligence is one of his fortes. As an extremely intelligent man, his speech and mannerisms give him away as being higher educationally trained. He has a conferred Doctorate. His primary, secondary and formal degreed College education is from Korea. He is an intelligent and successful Business man who has a high degree of morality. Many Koreans have a handicap when it comes to the English language. This is not particularly the case with Grand Master Kim. Although he is somewhat limited, he is learning more English each day very quickly. His command of it is very good. Students do not have much trouble understanding him. Physically Grand Master Kim is very agile and quite stretched out. Working out and having contact with his students each day in his classes is important to him. At his age when most men are winding down, he is still going strong. Mild mannerism and kindness and forgiveness and forever bearing are the majority of his personality. If you go into his hamburger shop, as he calls it, called Famous Burgers, you just might get asked to sit down and eat and he just might even pay for it even though he is in business to make money. He may hand you a soda cup and say, “Eat, eat, eat, you eat!” He would smile and hand you the cup and motion to the soda machine and ask you what you want to eat. Then he would chat with you and maybe hand you a DVD about Taekuk Musul, his passion. It is Grand Master Kim’s desire to promote intelligence in martial arts, along with courtesy, integrity, perseverance, self control, never giving up, long suffering, and peace among all nations, people, and kindred’s and creeds. He understands that a person can be good, moral, kind, loving, and honest individuals. He believes that all persons can have and lead a healthful, long, strong and physically productive life. This is one of the reasons why Taekuk Musul is taught the way it is. Along with calisthenics and physical activity and martial content, moral obligation and accountability is taught in Taekuk Musul. Grand Master Kim’s goals are to expand Taekuk
Musul all over the world. He invites everyone to inspect Taekuk Musul,
visit his web site, and to even try it out. It is also to let everyone
know that there is a martial art out there that is practical, has a
fine and royal tradition, and is comprehensive and fun. It is to let
everyone know about the human body system, about the human mind, will,
emotions and the human spirit. He wants to spread to the word that there
is a martial art out there that promotes the healing side of martial
arts, yet on the other side can kill. For instance, a hard pushing pressure
or strike can kill, yet a lighter push or strike differently causes
paralyses or can even bring healing. Taekuk Musul now has schools in different parts of the world including Korea. In the Sacramento, California, USA metropolitan area there is several schools including my own. There are two large colleges in this area which are universities, the larger and higher learning being the University of California at Davis. Taekuk Musul has fast growing schools in each college. Each year Taekuk Musul has a very large world wide martial arts competition called the World Gold Cup Open Martial Arts Championship. This tournament was held at the California State University of Sacramento, but now it has been moved to the more prestigious, larger and higher institute of leaning called the University of California at Davis, California, USA. Contestants come from other countries to this tournament and from all over California and parts of the United States. In conclusion, I have been in martial arts for more than thirty years myself. I am a fifth degree black belt holding multiple black belts in several styles from first to fourth degree. I have studied and still am studying many martial styles and thoughts and modalities. I have certification in certain healing arts and healing modalities through the Healing Arts Institute of Citrus Heights, California, USA, a very prestigious healing arts private post secondary school with an internet site. Also, since 1970, I have been and still am a practicing ordained Christian Full Gospel minister, pastor, and evangelist. School number four of the World Taekuk Musul Federation here in Sacramento, California, USA is my school. I teach Taekuk Musul. I have been involved in Taekuk Musul for over six years, and I have known Grand Master Kim for about ten years total. In my study and investigation of Taekuk Musul, I have found that it is much more than what meets the immediate eye. It is quite unique, comprehensive, complete and extensive, and with healing arts attachments. It has elements of many other styles, some of which have Korean bases or elements to them. Among these are older Korean martial names such as Yudo, Sirum, Tae Kyon, Soo Bhak, Tang Shou, and Kwan Pup. Along with all this, the leader and founder, Grand Master Suk Ku Kim, is a nice man and great leader who is simply humble, personable, giving and has a good personality. I heartedly recommend Taekuk Musul to everyone.
